Senior DevOps Engineer

Job Summary

As a member of the DevOps team, your primary focus will be administering, maintaining, and improving the Akixi cloud infrastructure and production systems, working closely with the Senior DevOps Engineer.

You will be responsible for a wide range of activities and this role offers a great opportunity to develop and enhance your existing DevOps skills and to gain new skills, as we look to consistently deliver a robust and reliable cloud infrastructure for our customers.

Due to the nature of the role, some out-of-hours work will be required.

This role would be suitable for a passionate technologist with demonstrable skills in Linux and cloud-based systems with good experience in DevOps, looking to enhance and build on their current skills.

You must have excellent attention to detail, a desire to learn and continually improve by researching and developing new technologies, and the ability to understand the right tool for the right job.

You will have meticulous attention to detail and a desire to see any task completed to a high standard.

  • Deploy and configure software products and production systems.
  • Discover and recommend ways to improve automation, ease configuration, and reduce human error.
  • Perform root cause analysis to identify issues and implement solutions.
  • Produce and maintain documentation of service issues and known resolutions.
  • Monitor, maintain, and enhance all aspects of the cloud infrastructure, and ensure service uptime, quality, monitoring, and reliability.
  • Implement and maintain security practices and ensure that systems are secure against threats.
  • Provide operational and development expertise to ensure our systems do not fail and can be fixed quickly if they do.
  • Constantly seek to improve by researching, developing, learning, and keeping up to date with new technology developments.

We do not demand that candidates hold a degree or a specific qualification, but we do expect candidates to have a strong background in systems administration with 2+ years of work experience.


  • Educated to degree level (BSc or BEng), or with equivalent professional experience in engineering, information technology, telecommunications, computer science or a related discipline.
  • Experience of installing, configuring and trouble-shooting Linux server environments.
  • Experience with Bash shell scripting.
  • Experience of system administration, system design, support, and server management.
  • Cloud experience, preferably AWS e.g. EC2 servers, Virtual Private Clouds, S3 storage, and CloudWatch monitoring.
  • Experience with SQL database technologies, ideally PostgreSQL.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems, preferably Red Hat/CentOS.
  • Excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivation with a strong ability to independently research information on various topics.



  • Experience writing clean, maintainable scripts, preferably Python.
  • General knowledge of internet technologies and network fundamentals including HTTP, TLS, IPv4 and packet tracing.
  • Google Cloud and Azure experience welcome.
  • Experience with monitoring systems.
  • Experience of the Atlassian Suite e.g. BitBucket, Jira, Confluence.
  • Experience with developer tools such as Git.
  • Experience with code deployment tools e.g. AWS CodeDeploy and Bitbucket pipelines.
